Here are the New Zealand team binding up quickly. Notice how loose their binds are, but how comfortable they look once bound, plus how balanced.

“Loose” and “comfortable”??? Doesn’t compute with anything I learned in my years in the front row. What is the lesson here? Massive All Black front rowers don’t need to bid tight? Orthodox thinking is tight binding allows for better transmission of power. This is uncontested setting. If they were hitting the scrum machine etc would they tighten the binds?

With kids especially, the tight binding at least minimises the risk of neck injuries. So how will this aid technique?

A prop needs to have the ability to adjust position dependent on the physical shape and strengths and weaknesse of his opposite number, which of course varies by opposition. I have always found the txt book “must bind tight” instructions inflexible – you can find yourself at the mercy of your opposit number and no wiggle room. Watch some old video of Graham Rowntree – at times he actually loosens to the extent that he is very much outside the TH and the opposition TH is unable to dominate. He did this against the good Tight Heads he came up against. More equal contests brought more orthodox positioning.
