Improving your passing drills by David Clarke

Here is a great video of a team training, and concentrating on passing. They then go into a game of touch.

The passing drills are pretty standard. The players are enjoying the training. However the quality of processes and therefore outcomes are not high.

What coaching input might you add?

These players and drills lack intensity and focus. They are practically sleepwalking through the drills. I suggest the coach needs to inject discipline.

For 4-corners drills, use cones, and demand that once players enter the grid (step in past the cone) they are, from then on, sprinting hard and running low, until they reach the other cone. The catch and pass must occur at place.

Same thing for the simple pop pass drill, stand firm before entering the grid (too many guys were starting into the grid slowly walking), but then sprint hard on to the pass, step hard again, make an evasive cut upon receiving the pass and just before offloading. Most passers did not throw a sharp pop pass, but a lazy forward pass. Demand crisp execution at high pace.

For simple “hands” too many guys were standing, i.e., only one ball was being passed among 5… reduce the number to 4, and get 5 balls going. The field is at least 100m, but it seems they jogged less than 50, before lazily turning around and jogging back in. Have each line go off in intervals, so that 5 lines are moving up field, spaced 15 or so meters apart. Demand a higher pace, and zero error.

Dropped balls, forward passes, or walking means calistenics!

They will enjoy it all the more if you place these demands in the right manner.

Then as you move to the touch game, make sure the defense retreats after each touch, and each restart is sharper. The halfback pick and spin pass was too lazy.

I noticed that they do not finish well with their hands at the point of release. Their hands should end up in a pistol like position shooting their target with arms out stretched. This will help increase the accuracy of their pass. Their catch wasn’t too bad for the state of the passes, howevver by getting them to get their hands up early allows for time to react to wayward passes. I Also notice that there is alot of players standing around during the first passing drill. You could introduce more balls and have them going one line of four after the other. This will increase the amount of practice and or reduce drill time to allow for more coaching.

Passes need to be flatter, to much laughing/carry on when someone drops ball. Coach no where in sight. Needs to be more hands on, coaching when mistakes are being made.

I would first of all get them closer together and work on short passing first.I would tell them to have their hands in the “ready ” position to give the passer a target when passing to a receiver. hands up chest high..

all the passes seemed to have come from the stomach, each player receiving the ball and then commencing a as low loop of the ball in their hands before making a looping pass. I would work on a quick pass across the chest and the show of hands by the pass receiver.
